what is the role of social media within social movements?

November 18, 2010

Lina Srivastava and David Lerner put together the following slide presentation, cleverly subtitled “Social media won’t save the world… but it might make the job easier”, which makes some great points about the role of social media within movements. The key bits for me are on slide 19:

  • Social Media is best for short bursts of awareness-raising, directed actions, soliciting donations arising from particular events, and for creating contacts and building networks.
  • Sustained movements require conscious awareness, engagement (which includes proactively managed social media tools), cultivation and active personalized stewardship, and investment in impact.

I like this presentation. Realistic, pragmatic, and yet constructive.
